Bravery Quotes:

 

~ "It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been in any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived." Scout Finch, Chapter 11 page 115

      This is a quote that explains why Scout thinks Atticus is brave without even having to use a gun, which many men back then were only brave if they had used a gun. 

 

 

~ "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.You rarely win, but sometimes you do." Atticus Finch,  Chapter 11 page 128

This is a quote that explains how Atticus planned to raise his kids knowing that you can be brave no matter what you do. 

 

 

~"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself.  The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." Atticus Finch, Chapter 11 page 120 

            This is a quote that explains bravery because bravery is also going against peer presure and following your own ways.          

 

Racism Quotes:

 

** "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box.  As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash."** Atticus Finch, Chapter 23 page 253

          This is a quote that shows racism that happened in the court between Tom and Mr. Ewell, when Tom, a black man, was charged guilty to a crime he didn't even commit.

 

**"In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life."**  Atticus Finch, Chapter 23 page 252

          This is a quote that shows how racist the deep South can be when it comes to trials.

 

 

**"Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed."** Scout, Chapter 25 page 276

          This is a quote that shows Scout's point of view on the matter of Tom's trial. This proves that in Maycomb, white men are favored over black.

 

**"Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don't pretend to understand."**    Atticus Finch, Chapter 9 page

          This is a quote about Atticus's opinion on the matter of his new assignment, defending a negro.  

 

Education Quotes:    

 

-"First of all if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."- Atticus Finch, Chapter 3 page 

            This is a quote by Atticus informing Scout on how the real world is.

          This is a quote about Miss Maudie educating Scout on what turns out to be the symbol for innocence. 

 

- " So it took an eight-year-old child to bring 'em to their senses.... That proves something - that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they're still human. Hmp, maybe we need a police force of children."- Atticus Finch, Chapter 16 page 180

          This is quote that proves no matter how we all act, everyone is still human.

 

 

Prejudice Quotes:

 

 

•  "The witnesses for the state have presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court, in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted, confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption - the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber. Which, gentlemen, we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin, a lie I do not have to point out to you. You know the truth, the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men cannot be trusted around women, black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men."     Atticus Finch, Chapter 20 page 233 

          This is a quote explaining how everyone see's Negros in the 1930's.

          This is a quote of Jem's veiw that everyone is the same, which is how normality comes into play.

          This is a quote by Sherrif Tate that shows not every person does as they should, but more on what they think they should.
