Why to ban To Kill A Mockingbird

Our Beliefs:          

•  We believe this book should be banned for many reasons including the language. The language in this book is very bad and would get a little kid a time out and his mouth scrubbed out with soap. It is offensive language to some races and uses words that children should not know.  Teens that would read this and learn these words would use them to try to be cool. They would develop a habit of cussing which would stick with them for the rest of their life and would become harder and harder to break. Habits such as that can damage a young adult's job hunt. They can not control themselves and will not be hired. This could make life harder for them as well.

What can happen:

•           Cussing can also get you into a lot of trouble with other people of a different race. To some races, this commonly used racial slur is very offensive. This slur can destroy friendships and possibly get someone suspended from school. For most kids, this is hard to follow, it’s not worth it to let kids struggle through a challenging book if the most they will get out of it is bad language. So sure it's a classic but it needs to at least be re-written so that it is not as offensive. The idea that this story has brought upon us is meaningful, but is it really necessary to have all the bad cussing? The answer to that question is no! This book's language is not appropriate and the content is not either. Some content in this book describes a rape scene, a man shooting a dog, a visual of a insane man eating squirrels and cats with blood stained fingers and teeth. It also has many fights in it which is not acceptable for little kids to participate in. A sub-character named Dill also runs away for not being treated like a child and could pop an idea into kids heads that if they cant get what they want they can just run away. This is not the case though.  

How it could be used:

•           I don't think this book has to be completely banished off the face of the Earth. I think it would work better a year later. It'll process through our minds and we'll have a better understanding of this context in our freshman year.I think it would work better a year later. My teacher has been telling me that the high school program has been begging to take it back so they can have it at their school. In our society there is enough discrimination against some races and we do not need extra things like this book to boost this bad habit.

-Our Conclusion:

     This book is meaningful, it works well, it gives people a real image of the bad attitude going on in the 30's. There are parts that are pretty extreme for this topic but it has a point. It's a good story that is inspiring to some people, but I don't believe all the inappropriate and bad grammar shouldn't be used so often.
