How each song fits with the theme
Someday by The Strokes
We chose this song for the theme changes. We thought it fit perfectly because the whole song is talking about how life changes, and how every person you know will eventually change.
This is Your Life by The Killers
This song is about people who are patient in life, always waiting for something better to come along. We chose ‘This is Your Life’ for the theme of responsibility.
3 AM by Matchbox 20
Though this song seems like it would be about love, it’s really about a struggle with cancer. We believe it takes a courageous person to overcome cancer, so that’s why we chose 3 AM for bravery.
Decode by Paramore
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem discover secrets, from the beginning to end. ‘Decode’ is about discovering someone is not who they seem to be. Scout and Jem find discover so much about themselves, and the people in Maycomb.
The ’59 Sound by Gaslight Anthem
The first line in the song says ‘I wonder which song their gonna play when we go?’ It doesn’t seem like they’re standing up for a family member but as the song goes on, you hear lines like ‘I was playing a show down the road when you’re spirit left you’re body.’ They were subconsciously standing up for a family member, by having them in their hearts at all times.
Jenny was a Friend of Mine by The Killers
It is quite evident that Scout grew stronger throughout the book. The way we perceive this song is about a girl who faced many obstacles in her life (like scout) and overcame them to be a stronger person.
The Perfect Boy by The Cure
It is obvious in the book that Scout and Dill are falling for each other at a young age. The perfect boy is about a girl’s never ending search to find the perfect boy, so she’ll live happy ever after.
Kristy, Are You Doing Okay? by The Offspring
We really love this song, but that’s not why we chose it. It was hinted more than once in To Kill a Mockingbird that Mayella Ewell was abused by her father. This song is about a young girl who was abused by her parents, and to me you have to have a lot of courage to even stay in that situation.
The Feel Good Drag by Anberlin
There’s a point in the book where Jem faces the fact as to why Boo Radley never leaves his house. In this song, they have many lines like ‘this was over before it ever began’ we associate that with someone facing the facts.
The Scientist by Coldplay
Standing up for something that’s right is often hard to do, especially if it means leaving someone you love. This song is truly amazing, and it’s about leaving someone and how hard it is, even though it’s the right thing to do.
Imagine by John Lennon
There are many people in Maycomb County who are against prejudice, but don’t want to speak out. To us, Imagine is the perfect example of what people were thinking, but were too scared to say anything.
Best of You by The Foo Fighters
The pain you go through when you lose someone you care about is truly unbearable. You could perceive this song many different ways, but the way we see it is losing someone. That could be someone died, or you just never see them again.
One by Creed
It was really hard to find a song that we liked for discrimination. But when we looked up on google songs against discrimination, we found this song on many sights. The lyrics are so plain, yet they mean so much. The song states ‘one is the only way’, which is saying the only way we can be a unified country is to stand as one.
Landslide by Smashing Pumpkins
This song was originally done by Fleetwood Mac, but we personally like this version better than anyone who has ever covered it. There are many revelations made throughout the book, and some you don’t even find until the last page. This is how ‘Landslide’ is, you are intrigued with it to the very last line, and it has so much meaning.
I Dare You to Move by Switchfoot
There’s one line that stands out ‘I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor’, and to me that’s like saying someone has fallen down. When someone falls down, you can either look the other way and make them help themselves, or see the good in them and help them get to where they belong.
