Alabama 1930's

The times were rough all around living in Alabama during this time was the great depression so the economy was bad. With nobody buying food or homes it stops all business and it was harder to find food, provide shelter, and prevent disease. This was one of the worst times in American history with the dust bowl in the Mid-West, times were hard.

The creation of the K.K.K causing havoc. They would perform acts of racism like burning a cross, or jumping them when they were alone. Authorities didn’t take action until blacks were killed and realized the mistake they should've corrected. The K.K.K is still around but they aren't as public as they were and will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Segregation was stopping blacks from attending certain schools and not getting a good education. Blacks and Whites had separate water fountains, bathrooms, waiting rooms and many other facilities.

Kansas 1930's

Times were still hard in the farm land of Kansas before the 1930's it was a field that every farmer wanted and the place to grow crops. But once the dust bowl struck it was a nightmar for everyone in this once grand field. There was up to 10 feet of dust piling up on houses. If people tried to move the great depression was everywhere else. The upside to Kansas was it wasn't to racest and everybody had the same rights.

Kansas or Alabama?

I Myself would favor Kansas over Alabama because money isn't so tight in kansas. The people aren't as racest and blacks have the same rights as whites. There is the Dust Bowl during this time so there would be no farming and people were miserable, but the great depression is happening everywhere else with the crime increasing. The dust Bowl only lasted 10 years so after that farming would be great and the econamy would start to look better. That is why i prefer Kansas over Alabama.

Kansas City Jazz

Kansas City was a jewel in the bleak dessert that the Midwest became in 1930’s. While the dust storms raged around it Kansas City became one of America’s great jazz towns.

In the 30’s the Kansas City political machine was wrought with corruption and headed by “The Boss” Tom Pendergast. Under Pendergast the city enjoyed the tolerance of after hours drinking, and boasted dozens of gambling joints and speak-easies all of which had their alcohol supplied by Pendergast’s administration. Amidst the clubs and  underground bars of the city a new style of Jazz was born. Kansas City Jazz as its known incorporated massive amounts of improvisation into traditional jazz music. The music itself was very free containing no real structure but instead having the musicians improvise, sometimes for hours on end. Jazz was one of the main influences that shaped Kansas City during the Depression Era.

The Kansas City Massacre

The sun was rising over the Kansas City skyline on the morning of June 17th 1933 when machine gun fire erupted outside of Union Station. Within seconds four lawmen and the prisoner they were transporting lay dead. The prisoners name was Frank Nash, he had been arrested the day before and had been being transported back to Leavenworth Prison when this would be rescue attempt took place. The incident which was dubbed the “Kansas City Massacre” by the newspapers sparked one of the greatest crime sprees in U.S. history and lead to the formation of what we know now as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This event kicked off the careers of some of the United States most notorious criminals including, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, Baby Face Nelson, and Bonny and Clyde, people who would shape the face of America in the 1930’s.

Kansas City or Alabama?

I personally would prefer to live in Kansas City rather than Alabama during the thirties Kansas City was a hot house for jazz at the time and, being a musician myself, this is a strong appeal, but most of all Kansas City lacked the racism that made Alabama notorious in the thirties. The Klan, though it was active in Kansas was not nearly as active as in Alabama due to the deterrent of the Dust Bowl and the considerably lower African American population. Kansas might not have been thriving in the 30’s but neither was anywhere else in the country and I think that the distraction that music Kansas would have provided would have been an excellent escape. Becoming a professional musician is my dream and in the 30’s there was no better place to get your start than in Kansas City.

Jordan,
You have some good articles. Remember to edit what you write and don't add a period until you are sure you have a complete sentence. I would choose a couple more articles and you should be finished. Mrs. Nel
