Atticus Quotes

"Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you began anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

"Gentleman, A court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up."

"There is a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep 'em all away from you. That's never possible."

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of veiw, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

"The one thing that doesn't abide by mojority rule is a person's conscience."

Atticus Quotes Paragraph

The quotes we compiled regarding Atticus really portray his character. As you know he is a father, lawyer and an overall decent person. He really does believe in the worth of honesty and being well brought up. Miss Maude says he is the same in the courtroom as he is in the street and I think that describes him perfectly. This is what makes him a believable and reliable lawyer.

Jem Quotes

"Atticus says cheating a black man is ten times worse than cheating a white."

"If there's just one kind of folks, why can't they get along with each other? If they're all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something.  I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time.it's because he wants to stay inside."

“I swear, Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it’s mortifying,”

"Backround doesn't mean old family."

No. Think we're almost to the tree now. Few yards from that, an' well be to the road. We can see the street light then."

Jem Quotes Paragraph

Jem as a character is intelligent, independent, and protective. He is a typical big brother and though he is quite young throughout the story, he serves the role of big brother to Scout as well as he can. He thinks very highly of Atticus and has a certain respect for him. He figures things out and has his own opinions on things. And he is reluctant to admit he is wrong.

Scout Quotes

"Neighbours bring food with death, and flowers with sickness, and little things in between. Boo was our neighbour. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a knife, and our lives. "

"After all, if Aunty could be a lady at times like this, so could I."

"He had to stoop a little to accommodate me, but if Miss Stephenie Crawford was watching from her upstairs window, she would see Arthur Radley escorting me down the sidewalk, as any gentleman would do."

"Until I feared I would lose it I never loved to read. One does not love breathing."

Scout Quotes Paragraph

Scout is main character and narrator of the novel. As you read the book, you feel she is just getting a sense of the world and things around her. Things like racial prejudice and the feeling that African- Americans are inferior to white people. She is raised as a child with no mother and no major feminine influence. She grows up identically to Jem and is reluctant but understanding to succumbing to being a true lady.

Ms. Maudie Quotes

"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."'

"Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets."

"Things are never as bad as they seem."

Ms. Maude Quotes Paragraph

Ms. Maude is the Finch's neighbor. She is elderly and befriends Scout and Jem. Not much concerns her and this is learned when her house catches fire. She sees the positive side of life. She is the first real feminine influence is Scouts life.

Dill Harris

"I'm Charles Baker Harris. I can read. I can read anything you've got."

"I'm little but I'm old."

I'm going to be a new kind of clown. I'm going to stand in the middle of the ring and laugh at the folks.

Dill Quotes Paragraph

When Dill comes to Maycomb County, he instantly becomes friends with Jem and Scout. Dill has a big mouth and can't resist using it. He is daring and we see this when he runs away. He does think that all the racial prejudice is wrong and he thinks all are created equal. He has unusual sense of humor and is one of the more likable characters in the book.

Judge Harvey

"That's enough now. Don't be 'fraid of anyone here, as long as you tell teh truth. All this is strange to  you, I  know, but you've nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to fear."

Judge Harvey Quotes Paragraph

Judge Harvey is not exactly a major character in the book. We know him as a fair and honest judge who runs his court well. He gives the impression of a sleeping judge but he is in fact wide awake. He is the judge of the Tom Robinson case. We get hints that he may have been on Tom's side because he appointed Atticus for this case.

Tom Robinson

"Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for, she seemed to try more than the rest of 'em."

Tom Robinson Quotes Paragraph

From the instant we meet Tom in the story it is clear that he is the underdog of the story. A black man who did nothing wrong was accused by a white man of raping his daughter. It is remarked by Scout that Tom had as good manners as Atticus. He is a good man whose only crime was wanting to help Mayella. He says he felt sorry for her and Atticus put up the best case possible to prove him innocent but in the racist south it was not good enough.

Boo Radley

"Will you take me home?"

Boo Radley Quotes Paragraph

Though we only meet Boo at the very end of the book, his legacy goes from cover to cover. He is viewed as a nemesis and a hero. It is the relentless quest of Scout, Jem and Dill to get him to come out of the house in which he resided in for so long. He ends up as being a gentleman as Jem escorts him home. An icon of the book, Boo Radley finally came out.

What an excellent compilation but remember you need a paragraph of analysis for these. You should have a great presentation. Mrs. Nel
